Food processors
...listen to your doctor

With food contamination stories a major event on the nightly news, and as more ambulance chasers (plaintiffs' attorneys) become astute to contamination as big pay out cases, food processors must take a lesson from the medical community, who have now learned to practice defensive medicine. Food processors must learn to practice defensive processing.

Food contamination is going to happen just like the airline and space program tragedies. People are human and make mistakes. Thinking it can't happen is like playing ostrich and hiding your head in the sand. However, you can limit your exposure by taking a pro-active, aggressive approach to food sanitation by upgrading your process with the latest technology and employing Best Available/Affordable Technology (BAT). See page 6 for the BATs.

Seawater, although very clear, contains 3% or 30,000 ppm of salt! This is why dissolved solids can be a hidden pollutant in water! It may look pure, but it may have high T.D.S.

Processor of the future

Sunshine Farms is the first poultry processor to employ the RGF Enviro-Vision Program to their plant. The new, state-of-the-art plant will feature an RGF dissolved air flotation wastewater treatment plant and will also utilize RGF's air and water purification systems. In addition, RGF will install their photoionization system, which will irradiate the chicken surface for near total bacteria reduction. The bottom line is that the Sunshine plant will have very low bacterial counts in their air, water, and on the chicken surface. The results will be a longer shelf life and a safer product. The plant will be complete by June 2000.

Boat washers may need water treatment
RALEIGH, NC - The state's Division of Water Quality (DWQ) is cracking down on marine businesses for power washing boats either directly over the waterway or right at the shore.
According to Marine Trade Services, a trade group in Wilmington, NC, DWQ conducted water tests at two facilities and found that the pollutant levels were well above state standards. The DWQ ordered the offending marinas to find a way to treat the power wash runoff.
DWQ will be conducting more onsite visits and random water testing this year. Those found in violation of water quality rules will be fined and penalties assessed where applicable.

A car wash owner's worst nightmare!
A CBS TV news affiliate in West Palm Beach, Florida carried a prime time news story about a couple driving a "high priced vehicle" through a "drive-through" car wash with an odor so bad the woman became sick in the car (yuck!). The problem at the internationally known gas station was a reclaim system with a high bacteria load and no disinfection or oxidation. I bet the lawyers can smell big bucks!! RGF's Catalytic Oxidation System would have eliminated this potential public relations and liability nightmare.

Ozone Sanitizing for Meat Processing

The Challenge: Sanitizing Safely
Plumrose USA, Inc., a major producer of high quality packaged pork products, wanted to assure the highest possible level of sanitation and protection from potential pathogens and spoilage microbes while minimizing the need to store and handle hazardous chemical cleaners and sanitizers. "The more chemicals we can take out, the better off we are going to be," Freddy Mortensen, Senior Vice President, Production, for Plumrose explained.
The Old Way
Like all companies using chlorine-based cleaners and sanitizers, the Plumrose facility faced increasingly stringent regulations and expense in meeting strict environmental standards. While effluent burden is not a current problem for them, it could be in the future. The company is also alert to any effective ways to contain operating costs.
Several other meat processors have encountered potential human pathogens in meat products recently. To avoid similar problems, Plumrose focused attention on finding more effective ways to safely sanitize processing equipment and work areas.
The New Way
Plumrose contacted RGF to install RGF's state-of-the-art ozone system to provide ozonated water on demand for several sanitizing operations in the processing plant. An ozone system would provide the highest level of sanitation and avoid the use and handling of hazardous chemicals. In addition, since ozone rapidly decomposes to oxygen, there would be no possibility that any residue would contact the company's meat products.
Freddy Mortensen, Senior Vice President of Production and Robert White, Quality Control Manager for Plumrose, investigated potential systems that might meet their needs. RGF Environmental Group designed and assembled a complete system to produce ozonated water on demand for several processing area stations within the plant. The system included an electrical corona generator using a PSA oxygen generator for the feed gas, an injector, contactor tank, distribution pipes and pumps, fully automated controls, air quality sensors, and proprietary application systems designed especially for the Plumrose operations.
The Results: Safer Work Environment and Excellent Sanitation
The new RGF system began operation in October 1999. Its first use was for cleaning and sanitizing the stainless steel transportation racks. The racks travel through a three-part sanitizing machine. The first step is an alkali cleaner.

Originally this was followed by a first rinse and final rinse with chlorinated water. Now 1 ppm ozonated water is used for both rinses. Because of the success of the rack cleaning operation, additional uses of ozonated water for sanitizing equipment throughout the plant are being implemented, including, sanitizing plastic storage tubs and stainless steel walk-in coolers. As an added benefit, cooler sanitation now uses cold (ozonated) water, reducing heating costs, load on the HVAC, and condensation.
Recycled Water
Because of the design of the system, water from the final rinse is recovered, reozonated, and used for the first rinse. Recycling reduces water usage, effluent burden, and treatment and disposal costs.
Microbiological Safety
E.coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and other new pathogens, which worry meat processors, resist chlorine, but are effectively killed by ozone. The ozone system began operation October 6, 1999 and has resulted in equal or better sanitation levels.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and EPRI were instrumental in raising the awareness of ozone and bringing together Plumrose and the RGF Environmental Group. Prentiss County Electric Power Association (PCEPA), TVA and EPRI sponsored a Tailored Collaboration Project which assists with the start-up and collection of data for process verification.

RGF’s Pure Air
to the Rescue!

Outrage of the Quarter

A golf course wash water recycling company, who claims to have sold over 40 systems, utilizes designer bacteria to treat their water, which is fine, so do we (of course, natural bacteria is even better)! The problem is, that it is a bacteria treatment system only - no filters, disinfection, or oxidation. So you have the course maintenance people spraying bacteria-laden water in a nice mist all over the maintenance area. Great!! Better yet, he also promotes dumping the left over HIP's (Herbicide, Insecticide, Pesticide) into the water because his bacteria also eat them!! We checked out the water and found extremely high levels of bacteria, not to mention the water failed a toxicity test, probably because it was colored with tracer dye from the HIP's. This is quite a soup to be aspirating around the neighborhood! Any personal injury attorneys around? This is a hot one!

How about a boat yard that claims to have a recycling system that is homemade. It consists of a tank and pump. The water is stored in a 1,000-gallon tank and simply reused over and over!! Sure we believe this one! Water that has washed smelly barnacles, algae, bacteria and bottom paint containing heavy metals is simply put in a tank in the hot sun and reused! This sun baked, toxic concoction would smell so bad it would evacuate the entire state! More than likely someone opens a valve at night!!

Another golf course, actually three courses - we found a competitor with a pre-programmed timer frequently back flushing his recycling filter, which is okay except the highly contaminated back flush water goes directly into a pond! Nice! Sure the recycled water looks great. It is all fresh make-up water! The same competitor has a pad design with a storm water drain that continuously drains!! Great idea! So who needs the recycling system?

Believe it or not - We found a competitor who is using chlorine in his wash water. It is probably better than aspirating bacteria, but who in his right mind would promote a mist of chlorine, which is highly corrosive (maybe it is sponsored by the Steel Manufacturing Association), when the rest of the world is busy removing chlorine (a known carcinogenic) from our water, pools and atmosphere! This water recycling company is spraying it all over the maintenance yard!!! Any attorneys around? This ain't bad either!

JOINT FDA / USDA / RGF® / FOOD INDUSTRY MEETING HELD IN WASHINGTON, DC
RGF sponsored a Food Safety Technology Progress Meeting at FDA Headquarters in Washington, DC. Twenty-two (22) attendees reviewed the progress of ozone, UV and photo-ionization in the food industry. Key food safety, federal and industry personnel were present, including 11 representatives of the FDA and USDA. Also present were eleven (11) industry representatives from:
IBP, Inc. RGF Environmental
National Fisheries Institute Intl. Ozone Associates
Kraft Foods/Oscar Mayer Electric Power Research Institute
National Chicken Council National Turkey Council

The purpose of the meeting was to review the present status of ozone and UV irradiation regulations and industrial applications. Dr. Robert Martin, FDA and Charles Pearsall, RGF Vice President of Food Systems chaired the meeting. Mr. Pearsall presented the practical problems facing the food industry in implementing ozone and UV technology. Dr. Martin presented the federal regulations limiting the use of ozone and UV irradiation. It was generally agreed the Code of Federal Regulations covering UV irradiation and ozone were outdated and inconsistent. RGF will submit a petition with RGF lab analysis and industry testing data to broaden the scope and application of UV technology. Dr. Rice, president of International Ozone Organization is currently writing a petition to broaden the approval of ozone in direct contact with food. RGF will provide lab test and field test data for use of ozone in direct contact with chicken, turkey, beef, pork and lamb.

The RGF/TDF GreaseWorks System
The Problem
Wastewater containing grease represents a significant challenge for treatment at wastewater treatment plants. This type of wastewater traditionally has congealed in lines, upset activated sludge systems and digesters, and generally was considered to be non-compatible with any type of wastewater treatment facility. Restaurants, fast food establishments, food processors, hotels, institutions, etc., are required to have a grease trap that permits the grease to congeal and prevent the grease from being discharged into the sewer system. However, the congealed grease must periodically be removed from the traps for disposal.
The Solution
RGF/TDF's proprietary system has been developed to provide compatibility with wastewater treatment facilities, making it possible to efficiently treat and process wastewater laden with grease prior to discharge into anaerobic or aerobic digester systems. The RGF/TDF process consists of a series of specially designed reactors through which the grease is chemically treated under a fully automated program.
The Benefits
This system will allow a wastewater treatment plant to professionally process grease-laden wastewater.
Wastewater treatment plants can offset the equipment cost by charging processing fees for grease-laden wastewater from haulers.
The system will improve the quantity and quality of the digester gas in an aerobic environment.
The system is capable of treating wastewater containing grease without affecting the performance of the activated sludge process in aerobic and anaerobic environments.
The system's operating cost of chemicals is very low.
The system is fully automated and requires minimal maintenance.
This system provides the community with a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly method of grease disposal.

Total Services Program Update:
To date, the distributor network has caught on to the profits generated from this program. April Curran has spearheaded this program by calling virtually every owner of an RGF system installed in North America since 1996. The success of this program seems to be in the Oxy Puck System that eliminates the need for hydrogen peroxide. Many customers would go for long periods of time without hydrogen peroxide. Now, with the service agreement in place, it is no longer the responsibility of the customer to monitor the hydrogen peroxide. RGF technicians come by once a month and reload Oxy Pucks, as well as install new filters as needed, and complete a 15-point inspection of the system. Satisfied end-user customers - that's the goal with this project!! RGF distributors and customers should call April Curran at RGF (ext. 43) for additional information.

Golf Success Stories:
The Persidio Golf Club in San Francisco is managed by the Arnold Palmer Golf Group and operates as an environmentally correct facility. The golf course maintenance facility recently installed a RGF WashMaster 36 for recycling wash water during cleaning of the mowing equipment. The superintendent has been so satisfied with the system and the service that we provided, he has forwarded our name to several courses in the area that need systems. The Arnold Palmer Group now has evidence that the RGF WashMaster 36 is the answer to the recycling needs of golf courses and should prove to be another home run for RGF Golf.
What's new with the Total Service Program
The Oxy Pucks have been field tested since May 1999 and exceeded our expectations. We are now using them on our Total Service customer contracts.
Oxy Pucks have the following advantages over liquid
hydrogen peroxide:
•Thousands of times faster •Higher efficiency
•Much lower concentrations •Broader microbial range
•Non-corrosive •Neutral pH
•Biodegradable •Non-toxic
•Does not create byproducts •Easy storage
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Scott Johnson (Virginia), Jeff Dean (Georgia) and April Curran (Florida) for a record-breaking December units sales and total service contracts.

EPA says leach fields must clean up
As expected, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted tough new rules mandating carwashes, lubes and motor vehicle repair shops to clean up or eliminate any wastewater going into leach fields.
This rule on in-ground disposal systems, called Class V injection wells by the EPA, prohibits the construction and use of new motor vehicle waste disposal wells as of April 2000. The good news is the requirements for existing motor vehicle waste wells will be phased in over seven years. More good news; certain Class V wells, those in state-determined sensitive ground water areas, could be required to comply in as little as one year. The EPA estimates there are more than 500,000 Class V locations in the United States. Assuming we get a 50% market share, thats 250,000 RGF OWSs or RGF SDs.

Time for a Fresh Perspective?

If your days are like RGF's office staff-crammed with bustling activity you don't often get a moment to look at the big picture. Still, it makes sense to pause occasionally to access your approach to your work and look for ways to revitalize yourself. The payoff? Better service that will benefit your company, increased profitability and the enhancement of your career.

Imagine that you own the company. What if this were your company? What methods would you suggest to cut expenses or improve the profit of your very own firm?

Amaze your boss. Put yourself in your boss' shoes for a moment. What areas of your position could you improve that your boss wouldn't expect? For example, which pending projects could you finish ahead of schedule? What problems or issues can you resolve that would surprise and please your boss?

Think like a newcomer. People who have just been hired don't know why things are done a certain way. So imagine that you're new to your job. How would you write a job description for yourself? As you review your work, examine specific tasks that may no longer be necessary but endure "because we've always done it that way".

Commit to personal development. Set aside time every weekend for personal success training-watch a work-related video, or read a book or trade magazine. Get ozone certified.
Hospital of the future

Bosch Braking Systems installs TO-60
A Thermo Ox-60 has been installed at Bosch Braking Systems to evaporate wastewater generated in a floor scrubber application. EDCO, an RGF distributor, was requested by Bosch to help with the project. It was determined that the Thermo Oxidizer was the best technology to apply to this particular water.

Bosch's facility covers thousands of square feet and the need to clean the floors is very much apparent.

You can literally eat off the floors at this plant. With that as the standard, they have one maintenance individual whose sole purpose is to ensure a clean working environment for his fellow employees. He continually scours the facility’s floor with a large Tennant floor scrubber. This practice had been avoided recently with the increase in environmental awareness and disposal problems. Now, with the installation of the TO-60, Bosch can freely clean their floors without the concern of heavy costs to dispose of the water generated. They have also incorporated the conveyor parts washer water into the TO-60 Evaporator which has reduced costs in treating that stream as well.

Post installation results are excellent and the company's management has expressed consideration in removing standard evaporators from the company’s other facilities and replacing with Thermo Oxidizers.
The RGF Thermo Oxidizer has again proven standard evaporators to be antiquated, cumbersome, unreliable and expensive to operate. This technology has broken the grandfathered operational expectations that standard evaporators exhibit. The Thermo Oxidizer can easily win any evaluation process based on the advantage it has over conventional evaporators: no rust/corrosion, no concentrate/slurry (just a dry ash), very low cost per gallon, automated operation and a high return on investment. (Paybacks in under one year!)
A breath of fresh air in the market!
